Arrow Defending the Pacific

Hello from the Esperanza in the Pacific. Did you know that we are blogging about our expedition to protect international waters here as marine reserves over on the Making Waves blog?

I hope that you will enjoy these updates. We have several more weeks so I would appreciate any comments or suggestions over on the blog itself.

We recently freed marine life from a longline and confiscated fishing gear and we are on the look out for other vessels.

If you have any questions I am happy to engage in discussions but would greatly appreciate your participation over in the comments sections on the blog so that other people who don't know about this forum can also join in. For some reason we rarely get comments over there

Also - there is a competition to name the 3 marine reserves in the pacific - you can submit your entries via this page.

Cheers
Lisa

The endangered marine life was freed from just ONE longliner. How on earth are our seas going to able to cope with the slaughter that fleets of these boats inflict? Unless something radical is done, it's goodbye turtles, marlin, tuna and sharks. Well done GP, much more please.

Default We're doing more than just saving the odd turtle and marlin

Hi Lumpfish,

Greenpeace has spent several years campaigning in the Pacific and we are working with significant progress in the political arena across the region - towards solidarity of Pacific island countries so that united they can stand up against the distant water fishing nations like Japan and Korea.

We have taken to the high seas to expose the plunder of tuna and loss of other marine life as by-catch. When we take direct action against overfishing we can only have a very small immediate impact compared to the extent of the problem but when the stories about the actions travel out across the world they create ripples that go onto create waves of change!

This is how Greenpeace works.

We are also working with the tuna markets by applying pressure to fish retailers so this campaign is working through several different channels and we're doing everything we can with the ship at sea but as you can understand - it's a big ocean out here!

Cheers
Lisa

Thanks Lisa. It's good to see so much attention being focused on fisheries by GP http://www.fishupdate.com/news/fulls...n_the_Med.html

An example of an acceptable tuna fishing technique in the SW Pacific (yellow-tail tuna in this case)

I honestly think you should. Even though you might not agree with everything the organisation does you clearly support many of its pure conservation aimed activities and goals. By joining you do support those goals. The collateral damage of also supporting some goals you don't feel that fired up about you should just accept for the good of the grand picture. (also you take up a lot of costly bandwidth by talking on this forum all the time )
